What do you remember from the Golden Age?
Comments
I remember that as we coudln't study in the dark, my mother boought a gas oil lamp. That I wake up at 5 in themorning(I was an adolescent of 16-17) and go to the ques fro bread or milk, whereas my parents went to otehr ques, before going me, to school and them to office-only my brother (who had only 10 years old) stayed home.I remember that we laugh about Ceausescu during breaks at school, a,d that the ones who do that were punished(with another reason) to don't be able to apply to the faculty(cause of a bad vote in 'general behaviour'... This didn't happen cause the revolution came just after we finished the high-school
I remember everything I saw in the movie -the Dacia's , the block-flats, the pioneers costum, the money for faculty preparation, the struggle for food, whereas you had money in the pockets but couln't buy anything...But what was wors was the fact that you suspicion the others for betrayals, we had to take care of what to say(for ex my brother told to the principal teacher that in our home we never read the 'politica' newspaper but just the 'sport' journal...And the teacher told our parents that this could be a problem...) Stupid, absurd and hilarious in the same time...
Patricia-from the city of TIFF but who lives now in Belgium(where people have diffficulties to understand romanian black humour :(
I remember watching the concrete buildings at night as each block would go dark (building by building) as the power would be turned off. I remember sitting in the dark for hours while my parents would try to entertain us by candlelight (try doing that with 4 small children). I remember my mom saving all our water for the week in the bath tub. I remember standing in line for eggs for hours on end. I remember that my little sisters first words were "carne" because she craved the protein. We dreamed what bananas would taste like and made every attempt to make that the first piece of food we'd put on our mouths once we got out of Romania.
my whole childhood
i remember listening to radio free europe and voice of america in the dark
It was terrible!
I was born in 1974, in Bucharest, close to the city centre (Piata Unirii).
I remember the bottles, jars and paper (maculatura) collection.
All the uniforms: country's falcon (soimii patriei), pioneer, highschool.
The training of the youth for the protection of the motherland (PTAP). Pioneer's day (June 24th) training for three weeks, in order to perform on the "23 August" stadium.
The electricity, gas and water cuts, the gas low pressure in winter, that forced us to sleep in one room which we were warming up during the night.
Lines for milk, bread, meat, green bananas in winter (I waited for 3 hours when I was 10, it got completely dark, and when I was about to get there, they said they ran out of it).
TV series, Telecinemateca, Teleenciclopedia, Gala Desenului Animat, Concertul de Anul Nou de la Viena.
Our relatives visits from Western Germany and Italy, the chocolates, flour, coffee, spices, Dr. Oetker pudding powder they were bringing.
My mother's trip to Eastern Germany, Czechoslovakia and Hungary and the goodies she was bringing. Romania was the darkest of all socialist countries in the block.

See you soon at Festival du Nouveau Cinéma!
I remember the struggle vividly even through a child's eyes. I remember the humanity and humour as well.
